Chennai

Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Located along the Coromandel coast, Chennai is one of the largest metropolitan cities of India. The city has served as a major centre for industries and educational institutions. Chennai is also famous for its museums, galleries, and institutions which specialize in music and performing arts. Previously known as Madras, this beautiful city was ruled by a multitude of Indian kings and was also an important administrative hub for the British. Chennai International Airport and Chennai Central are the city’s own airport and railhead respectively, which connect Chennai to all major cities in India. Chennai is also linked to major metro cities in India via the Golden Quadrilateral, a network of national highways. You can also reach Chennai via sea and arrive at Chennai Port.

Major Attractions :

● Mahabalipuram: Located at a distance of 60 km from Chennai, Mahabalipuram was an ancient seaport. The quaint town is famous for the rock-cut architecture of its monuments, which has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
● Marina Beach: Running along a distance of 13 km, Marina beach is the world’s eleventh longest beach. If you want to be a part of the local culture, you can visit during mid-January and be a part of Kannum Pongal* celebrations.
● Kapaleeshwarar Temple: This legendary temple is a major Hindu pilgrimage site and reflects the beautiful work of Dravidian architecture.
● St. Thomas Mount: Located close to Chennai International Airport, St. Thomas Mount is a shrine dedicated to Mother Mary. A panoramic view of Chennai can be seen from the top of the hillock on which the church is housed.
● Fort St. George: Founded in the year 1644, Fort St. George is the first English fortress in India. You can take a tour of its museum which houses coins, artefacts, weapons, medals, etc. from the colonial era.

When To Visit :

The best time to visit Chennai is during the winter season which lies between November and February. The weather is pleasant during this time of the year and is a perfect time for enjoying the local festivities. Chennai experiences extremely hot and humid weather from March to May. If you happen to visit during this time, remember to stay hydrated and avoid city tours during the day. Chennai gets ample rainfall from June to September.
