Kerala Backwaters

Relax and refresh yourself with this package in the backwaters of Kerala, South India. This package includes places like Alappuzha, Kumarakom and Poovar. Enjoy your stay in house boats and lake resorts with sightseeing and interaction with local people.

Alappuzha, or Alleppey, as the world has come to call, is the land cradled amidst the glorious backwaters of southern India. Alleppey proudly wears the title of ‘‘Venice of the East”, which is more than justified by its web of rivers, interspersed with meandering canals. The bustling city is a mix of colonial buildings, surrounded by rice fields. Apart from being a merchant gateway, it is also historically prominent for its classical literature and cultural exchanges with the west. However, backwater tourism remains the main attraction here, with houseboats flocking the many waterways and channels. Alleppey is well connected by road, rail, and air. While Cochin International Airport is 78 km away, the district has its own railhead too. The waterways make for conveyance too, as an SWTD (State Water Transport Department) boat jetty rests just opposite the bus station.

Kumarakom is a beautiful town located on the shores of Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in Kerala. Set against the backdrop of the alluring Kerala backwaters, Kumarakom is a traveler’s favourite choice for a relaxing and enriching holiday experience. Kumarakom is the first region in India to implement ‘Responsible Tourism,’ which integrates the development of the locals and the hospitality industry. Kumarakom has been declared to be a Special Tourism Zone by the government of Kerala. Kumarakom is well connected by rail, road, and air; Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, while Kottayam Railway Station is the closest railway station.

Poovar is a beautiful coastal village in the Trivandrum district of Kerala. This quaint village was once a trading centre of timber, sandalwood, and spices. The main attraction here, is the estuary that brings together the Neyyar river, the sea, the backwaters, and the beach. If you want to experience a quiet and meditative time by yourself, this tiny island is the ideal place for you. The silence of the abode is broken only by the fauna or the fishing boats bobbing away in the distance. It is well connected to the mainland via the waterway. Trivandrum International Airport and Trivandrum Central are the nearest airport and railway station from Poovar respectively. The island is only accessible by boat, which will take you to Poovar in 15 to 20 minutes.
